The Goldendoodle gets its name from its mixed heritage of a Golden
Retriever and a Poodle. Goldendoodles are a hybrid dog in which
the first generation crosses exhibit a phenomenon commonly called
“hybrid vigor,” or “out-breeding enhancement.” This is an animal
breeding term referring to the fact that the first cross between
two unrelated purebred lines lives longer and grows healthier than
either parent line. The puppies are said to take on the best
traits of both parents breed. Today, though purebreds are still
valued, crossbreeds are becoming increasingly popular.
Goldendoodles are considered a hybrid crossbreed, which is a mix
of two purebreds, not to be confused with mixed-breed dogs which
have unknown heritage, multiple-breed lineage, and are commonly
referred to as “mutts.”
The Labradoodle (a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle cross) was
thought to have begun in Australia in the 1970’s and was bred to
produce a very low shedding and intelligent assistance dog for
individuals who need such a dog, but who suffer from allergies.
Soon to follow was the Goldendoodle. They were then first
deliberately bred in North America as a larger version of the
popular Cockapoo around the mid 1990’s.
Goldendoodle hybrids are also categorized by their specific
generational breeding. For example, a first generation
Goldendoodle (from a purebred Golden Retriever and Poodle) is
often referred to as an “F1” (50%-50%). An “F2” is a second
generation cross bred between two Goldendoodles (F1 bred to an
F1). Some Goldendoodles may also be “back-crossed” which means a
Goldendoodle is then bred back to one of the original parent
breeds which are usually Poodles. A “back-cross” is genetically
denoted by a “B,” which means Goldendoodles can be an F1, F2, F1B,
etc. Second generation Goldendoodles, or anything other than an
F1, are most commonly thought to have lost the hybrid vigor
because the gene pool has been drastically narrowed back down.
Goldendoodles are very intelligent, friendly, and great with kids.
They have a warm, loving personality and a happy temperament. They
have an eagerness to please, just like their Golden Retriever and
Standard Poodle parents. This affectionate breed is easily
trained, highly social, and naturally accepting of strangers and
other dogs. The Goldendoodle’s low shedding and hypoallergenic
coats have made them popular as both indoor and outdoor
companions. Goldendoodles have also inherited a love for water and
strong swimming skills, along with a keen sense of smell, from
both of their parent breeds.
Goldendoodles typically have a “shaggy-dog” look and can vary in
color, size and coat. The color will depend largely on the
Poodle’s genes and could be anything from white, blonde, apricot,
copper, champagne, gold, gray, brown, or even black Goldendoodles
coat will inherit fur that looks retriever-like, or poodle-like,
but usually something in between. They have wonderful coat texture
which can be straight, wavy, or have a loose curl. Unclipped
Goldendoodles will usually have hair about 4-8 inches long,
shorter on the face and longer on the body, tail and legs. They
require brushing twice a week, and grooming approximately four
times a year, depending on the look or style you prefer.
A “standard” Goldendoodle’s (the offspring from a Standard Poodle
and a Golden Retriever) average height will range between 22 and
26 inches, weighing anywhere between 45-65 pounds, with females
tending to be smaller than males. There are also smaller Goldendoodles that are considered “miniature,” however, they are a
result from breeders artificially inseminating a Golden Retriever
with a miniature Poodle, which results in a smaller version
of the Goldendoodle, which is not considered as healthy due to its
unnatural nature of breeding and can result in undesirable
effects.
Our goal is to breed healthy puppies, free from inherited diseases,
with a wonderful temperament that will make life-long companions.
Our puppies are bred only from healthy, carefully selected parents
with wonderful dispositions that are part of our family. We only
breed standard sized, first generation Goldendoodles (F1), since
we strongly believe in the strong genetic/health advantages of an
F1 Goldendoodle.
All of our parent dogs are dual registered with the American Kennel
Club (AKC) and the American Pet Registry (APR), and all of our
puppies are registered with the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC).
*We don’t sell our puppies to breeders,
brokers, or pet stores. Our puppies are family pets only.
*We recommend that your puppy be spayed or
neutered around the age of six months old.
